Course Description
UNIX Fundamentals is an instructor led training course which is
designed to provide a basic working knowledge of the UNIX operating system. While this
course is based on UNIX System V, most UNIX variants are similar enough that this material
will be relevant for virtually any variant of UNIX. Topics covered include: history of
UNIX, UNIX overview, kernel, command shells, file system, software development tools, VI
and Emacs editors, text processing tools, communications tools, system administration
tools, utilities, UNIX licenses, and using UNIX. Basic commands covered include: login,
logout, shutdown, new user, passwords, common subdirectories, working with files,
subdirectories, and permissions, customizing the user environment, printing, and basic
mail commands. The text processing tools, and UUCP will be discussed only. They are beyond
the scope of this course and would be covered in more detailed courses.

Course Prerequisites
Some previous computer experience, previous programming experience is
desirable but not required.
Terminal Objectives
The objective of this course is to provide a basic working knowledge of
the most important UNIX commands.
